The Paramount+ series 1883 is a prequel to the popular show Yellowstone. The show follows the Dutton family as they travel from Texas to Montana in the late 19th century. The show is set in 1883 and features a number of historical figures from the time period.
One of the characters in the show is Jim Courtright, who is portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton. Courtright was the Sheriff of Fort Worth from 1876 to 1879. During his time in the city, Courtright earned the nickname of “Longhair Jim” and became known for his skills as a gunman.
The show also features Ben H. Shipp who was elected as Sheriff on November 2, 1886. While little is known about Shipp individually, he was Sheriff during one of the most famous tales of Fort Worth and Tarrant County history.
James Dutton becomes a deputized ranger in Montana after establishing the Yellowstone Ranch. He is quickly deputized in Fort Worth before a shootout, and it is revealed that he was a captain in the confederate army.
